Beatus

double open
page of the
Beatus of Girona

It is a miniature manuscript (with illustrations) that consists of 284 folios, written by hand in Visigothic script. Several characteristics make the Beatus preserved in the Cathedral of Girona extraordinary. First, its age, since it dates from 975. We know this thanks to the fact that the date, the promoter and the authors are recorded on the last page. Next, its origin: we know that it comes from the monastery of Tábara (Zamora) and that in the 11th century it already appears in the Cathedral of Girona. The miniatures are the work of the monk Emeterius and the nun En, considered to be the oldest documented female artist. His work was not trivial, since this example, among the few beatus that have been preserved, is the one with the most illuminations (illustrations), in addition to having one that occupies two pages, a fact that does not occur anywhere else exemplary
