Alabaster figure
dedicated to
Saint Charlemagne

It is the polychrome alabaster statue that we can admire today in the Cathedral Museum. This is the real pièce de résistance of the cult of the emperor, its most paradigmatic and definitive visual expression. And it is, for this reason, that he presides over the chapel uninterruptedly from 1345 until the end of the 19th century. There are more solid arguments that make it possible to defend that the one in Girona is an original representation of Sant Charlemagne. The main fact is that there are iconographic particularities, as is the case with the Catalan-Aragonese heraldry, which turn the Girona image into a true unicum in the field of Carolingian representations.
