Tapestry of Creation

Front face of the tapestry of creation
It is popularly known as the Creation Tapestry, although curiously the technique with which it was made was embroidery. It presents us with a complex message narrated through biblical scenes, symbols, allegories and sacred history. The central wheel tells us the beginning of the first biblical book: Genesis, and around it a series of paintings develop where time and its segments take center stage - the year, the seasons, the months and the days—. The lower part, the most deteriorated, tells the story of Santa Elena in search of the True Cross. Although it is not known what its use was and at what point it fell into disuse, we do know that the person who designed it was a scholar of his time, of whom we do not know either of him or of the person who manufactured it the name. That a fabric from the 11th or 12th century has been preserved in such good condition is an exceptional fact.
